A Cordial Invitation

Alex Russell and their loved ones request the honour of your presence at The Death (& Immediate Rebirth) of Alex Russell, a celebration of life, poetry and community.

Order of Service

  • Guests are invited to gather from 2pm
  • Service begins at 2:30pm
  • Readings will be performed by a small selection of friends who have guided, inspired and supported Alex Russell's poetry journey over the last 7 years
  • Alex Russell performs their final poetry set
  • Guests shoot the poetry persona of Alex Russell to death with party poppers during this performance
  • Led by the funeral clown, guests join together to perform a ritual to revive the body of the former poet Alex Russell, channelling the immortal spirit of queer poetry into their form, allowing them to be reborn as their new pen name, Casey Garfield
  • Casey Garfield will finish Alex Russell's set, turning this final performance into their debut

The venue asks you please avoid sharing their address publicly. You are still encouraged to invite friends more privately though, as this is a celebration we want to share.

The venue is a warehouse by the waterfront, which is a superb environment to be shot to death in and but sadly not spectacular for accessibility - please be aware there is a step into the venue and the only toilet is up a set of stairs.

There is also no bar, so while Alex will be providing some soft drinks and a crate or two of something alcoholic, guests are welcome to bring their own drinks and snacks.

There will also be a funeral merch table selling poetry pamphlets, badges and stickers, almost all of which will be exclusive to this event. Card & contactless will be accepted and preferred, to avoid worrying about having correct change at a funeral.
